Julian Friers ARUA
Julian Friers was born at Bangor, Co Down in 1956. He is the son of the wood sculptor Ian Friers (1905 – 1975), elder brother of Rowel Friers RUA (1920 – 1998). From an early age he always he intended to be an artist however his specific interest in painting birds and wildlife began when his family moved from Bangor to a more rural location in Dundonald when Julian was seven years old.
In 1975 he entered Belfast College of Art but left after the first term, deciding that it was inappropriate for him. He soon gathered a portfolio of work and approached a leading local gallery which commissioned and sold some of his bird paintings. He had his first one person exhibition at that gallery in 1976 and in the same year married his wife Jill. In the late Seventies and early Eighties he became involved with a number of other galleries including the John Magee Gallery in Belfast. In 1992 he moved with his family to live on the Co Antrim Coast where he continues to work. His paintings are eagerly sought by collectors and are found in a number of prestigious art collections in the United States, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Ireland and the U.K. He designed the first Irish Duck stamp for the American conservation programme and also provided the paintings to illustrate `Gifts of the Desert`, a lavishly produced book commissioned by the International Foundation for the Conservation and Development of Wildlife.
